VILLAGE OF CAYUGA -- A boil water advisory was issued Village of Cayuga and for district 3 in the town of Aurelius.

The Cayuga County Health Department says the raw water quality from the northern end of Cayuga Lake was very poor.

When raw water quality is poor, the water plant has difficulty producing water that meets clarity standards.

The Health Department says the boil water order will not be lifted until the filter plant consistently produces water that meets the turbidity standard and water samples show that no harmful bacteria are present in the water system.

Officials say residents in the area should not drink Village water without boiling it first or use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Department of Health.

Aurelius also had a large water main break, which caused the town to lose a lot of stored clean water.

The boil water advisory is expected to last through the week.
