CARACAS, VENEZUELA (AP) -- The two men who will face off in an election to replace late Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez are set to formally register for the April 14 vote.

Chavez's hand-picked successor Nicolas Maduro was calling on supporters to accompany him to the National Election Commission later Monday. Opposition standard-bearer Henrique Capriles was expected to sign his election papers later in the day.

Campaigning doesn't officially start until April 2, but already the two sides are at each other's throats.

Capriles is accusing Maduro, the acting president, of playing politics with Chavez's body. Maduro has denounced Capriles for defaming the dead leader, who succumbed to cancer on Mar. 5.

Meanwhile, Caracas was returning to its normal bustling self, with school and state offices open again and bumper-to-bumper traffic in the streets.
