VERONA, ONEIDA CO. -- A Verona man is accused of driving drunk in a hit and run crash.

It happened last Wednesday at the intersection of Eastwood Drive and Greenwood Street.

State Police say 25-year-old Steven Merritt, of Merry Street, lost control on Eastwood Drive, slamming into a utility pole. Police say Merritt then took off in his car and got onto the Thruway at the Verona Exit. A witness was following him from behind.

Police later found the car parked in a commuter lot at the Canastota Thruway exit with heavy front end damage. Police say Merritt's blood alcohol content was .13%.

Merritt is charged with DWI, driving with a BAC of .08% or greater, unsafe speed, no seat belt, failure to keep right, leaving the scene of a property damage accident and a cell phone violation. He is scheduled to appear in Verona Town Court on March 19.
