HERKIMER (AP) -- State police say the man who fatally shot four people in two upstate New York villages had no money, no job and was maxed out on his credit cards.
But police say they still don't know why 64-year-old Kurt Myers opened fire Wednesday in a barber shop in Mohawk and a car care business in neighboring Herkimer.
State police senior Investigator Timothy Blaise said Monday that Myers had heavy credit card debt and had not been employed since 2006.
Myers was holed up in an abandoned building on North Main Street in Herkimer after the rampage that left four dead and two injured. Police say Myers immediately opened fire on officers when the entered the building, killing an FBI K-9 search dog. Police returned fire, fatally shooting Myers.
Police do not have an apparent motive for the shooting.
Myers was killed by police Thursday morning inside an abandoned bar in Herkimer.
Two men wounded at the barber shop, including the owner, remain hospitalized Monday.
Funerals for two of the victims were scheduled for Monday.
