ALBANY (AP) -- A week after an FBI dog was killed by a gunman in the Mohawk Valley, some state senators are hoping to make injuring or killing police animals a felony.

The crime is now classified as a misdemeanor.

Last week, 64-year-old Kurt Myers killed an FBI dog in an abandoned building in Herkimer before police returned fire, killing him. Myers had killed four men and wounded two others during the shootings in Mohawk and Herkimer.

The bill's fate in the Assembly is uncertain.
