Quick, effective work by Central New York plow drivers quickly improved conditions on major highways and other routes Friday evening.  CNYCentral Chief Meteorologist Wayne Mahar said snow fell at a pace of a half inch to an inch per hour during the early evening.   Totals from late afternoon into early evening are in the range of 5 to 7 inches.

State plows hit Interstate 690 where warning signs alerted drivers to be on the look out for slow moving plow trucks.  Manlius Town plows were clearing Route 5 and other significant routes.     Trucks were also laying down salt and other materials to melt ice and snow on surfaces.

Side streets still needed attention in the City of Syracuse.   Private plow operators were clearing driveways and commercial parking lots.  Mahar says the snow would continue to taper into the overnight hours.
