On any fair day, you can see 50 to 100 native fish in the DEC exhibit at the fairgrounds, but the fish you see today, may not be the same ones you'll see tomorrow.
Carl Rathje, Assistant Manager at the Oneida Fish Hatchery, manages the five 1,000 gallon tanks at the fairgrounds. The warm water game fish, like bass, are caught from Oneida Lake. Trout and other managed species come from a downstate hatchery. But the individual fish only stay on display for a couple days before being returned, to keep them healthy and less stressed. There's been an aquarium display at the Fair since the 1940s, and it's not only the tanks that are a tradition:
Rathje says some of the guys working now, had fathers who also staffed the aquariums at the State Fair.
