Students looking for some obscure, but still attainable scholarships, should begin searching the internet. There are websites aimed at helping students obtain at least one of the millions of scholarships available. Two websites to try include www.fastweb.com and www.finaid.org.
Aamong the scholarships you'll find on fastweb: a scholarship for left handed students. Also, a skateboard scholarship. There's also money for little people, and money for tall people. And even a klingon language scholarship, worth $500.
Cazenovia High School guidance counselor Cara Lavine recommends these websites to help combat the climbing cost of college, which can now cost as much as $50,000 a year. Fastweb.com helps you find the money that's most readily available "for you." According to Lavine, students can put in their profile and find scholarships that match what they are studying in college.
Meantime, the other website, finaid.org, provides more help--including a section to answer students' questions. Of course, you can also receive support and information from the college or university of your choice. And high school guidance counselors are also a valuable resource. Lavine says it is up to the individual student, though, to do his or her homework and find resources that can make college more affordable. She also recommends that students apply early and make sure all applications are complete.
