DEWITT -- Shoppers planning to take advantage of Black Friday sales should also be planning their trip and being vigilant so they do not get victimized by criminals looking to steal their purchases. Our Crimetracker report went to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department to get expert advice on how to stay safe in shopping center and mall parking lots.Thieves will stake out parking areas and watch shoppers as they exit the mall to see whether they put packages in the car. Onondaga County Sheriff's Department Sergeant Rich McCarron told us, "try to put them in your trunk. Close and secure your trunk. If it's an SUV put it in the rear. Cover the merchandise with a blanket or a sheet or something. So someone walking by isn't going to be able to see the item you just purchased."
Some criminals will grab bags or packages as you walk toward your car. McCarron says before exiting the store or mall you should put on your hat and gloves and have your keys ready to go. McCarron said, "have your keys in hand. Your safe and secure in the building much more than in the parking lot walking through." That way you can focus on your surroundings and be aware of anyone who might intend to harm you or steal your goods.
It's also a good idea to make your walk to your car as short as possible. Remember where you parked so you can exit the store or mall from the door nearest your car.
These crimes of opportunity do happen, but mall and shopping plaza owners do have security regularly touring parking areas this time of year. They also add additional officers from the police or Sheriff's department. If you have any concerns Sergeant McCarron encourages you to go to security for assistance.
