Even one drink can raise the risk

Every New Year's Eve, you hear the cautions against drinking and driving.  This year, there's even more concern because of Central New York's roads. "You aren't going to know what's around the next corner, or over the next hill," says State Police Sgt. Tim Siddall. "Blowing and drifting snow will be there, and if you're intoxicated, your ability to perceive the problem and then react to it is going to be greatly diminished, which greatly increases your chances for an accident."

Siddall suggests not drinking at all: "Just even one drink slows your reflexes," he says.  But if you do, have a friend drive, call a cab, or have a friend give you a place to stay, to make it a safe New Year's celebration.
