ALBANY (AP) -- In the past two years, the state Attorney General's Office has mediated more than 1,550 complaints against contractors, resulting in restitution of more than $800,000 to consumers.

Last week, the Web site www.NYKnowYourContractor.com - which allows consumers to search for contractors who have been subject to legal action or had substantiated consumer complaints filed - listed about 200 contractors for doing shoddy or incomplete work, or because they took people's money without finishing the job.

The judgments listed are the result of civil suits against contractors.

The complaints listed have not gone to court but have gone through a verification procedure conducted by the attorney general, and the contractor has been provided an opportunity to respond.
