SYRACUSE -- Sledding concerns were the focus of today’s Parks Committee meeting of the Syracuse Common Council. It comes in light of several recent accidents at the Westcott Reservoir. The city is putting up a fence to keep sledders off the hill after a girl was killed in a crash there.

12-year-old Taylor Denison of Auburn died when she slid into a parked car. The city hopes the fence serves as a physical barrier and a visual reminder about the dangers of sledding there. “I don’t know if we’re going to be able to curtail or stop sledding in the city of Syracuse, but maybe there are different ways where we can promote safety and safe sledding throughout our city,” said Pat Driscoll, City Parks Commissioner.

Signs are already posted telling people not to sled on the reservoir hill, but people ignore them. The reservoir is public land, but it is illegal to sled there and the city hopes people will take personal responsibility to keep everyone safe.
