Syracuse police report people have turned over 23 illegal handguns on this first of two days of gun amnesty. The program's goal is to get unregistered guns off the street.
The police trade each gun for a $200 voucher. The voucher gets redeemed after testing eliminates each gun from criminal involvement.
Police will continue accepting guns at the Public Safety Building until midnight tonight and then, again, next Wednesday. You can, also, call the police department ahead of time to get a gun picked up at your Syracuse home.
