Record Low Temperature, Record Low Snowfall
While it is certainly common to get cold temperatures through the begin of spring, our temperatures by early Tuesday morning will approach near record levels for Syracuse. With a very cold and dry air mass over our area through Tuesday morning, temperatures will plummet with clear skies and relatively light winds. My forecast for Syracuse is for a low temperature of around 12° by Tuesday morning. The record low for March 24th is 6° set back in 1906. While we will probably stay above this level, it will certainly be watched. In fact, we do expect many North Country and colder countryside locations to fall into the single digits by sunrise Tuesday. After dawn Tuesday, temperatures should moderate a bit.
The other record that we are keeping an eye on is one that will most likely be broken. After seeing a very active winter and snowy season across the area, accumulating snow has been at a minimum recently. In fact, Syracuse Hancock International Airport has only received 0.9” of snow (less than 1”) for the month of March. If we do not see any more snow for the rest of the month, we would set a brand new least snowiest March ever on record. Looking through next Tuesday, there is little chance for snow through Saturday. There is possibility for some limited light snow for the last couple of days of the month. It will be very interesting to see if we will break the record for the least amount of snow for the month of March. We will continue to track this record and keep you posted.
Here is a list of the top five least snowiest months of March on record:
1.2” (1962)
2.8” (1991)
3.0” (1987)
3.6” (1973)
7.1” (1995)
March 2009 so far: 0.9”
