ALBANY (AP) -- A special election in upstate New York's 20th Congressional District will send a new representative to Congress and deliver what some see as a statement on President Barack Obama and his economic policies.
Republican Jim Tedisco is running against Democrat Scott Murphy in Tuesday's contest to replace Kirsten Gillibrand (KEHR'-sten JIL'-uh-brand), who was appointed to the U.S. Senate in January to succeed Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Polls open at 6 a.m. in the district, which stretches from the rural Adirondack Mountains down to just north of New York City's suburbs.
The election is getting national attention, and both candidates have taken money from their national parties.
