CAMILLUS -- With the economy in turmoil, many businesses are struggling to survive. But one local couple is taking on the challenge by opening a new store.
They're putting on the last-minute touches in Camillus as the Saavy Wine Cellar gets ready to open its doors. "We're mostly working on adrenaline right now, so we are very excited," said owner Dale Record. It's been a lifelong dream for Dale and Allison Record, who recently returned to Central New York to open the store. "The idea of Dale and I owning a business together has been something that we've been kicking around and it's been a real dream for about 20 years," said Allison Palermo-Record.
In this dismal economic climate, the Records realize it's a tough time to open a small business, but they're up for the challenge. "We wanted to come home, start our own business. This part of town is great for that and that's why we're here," said Dale Record. And with more than 500 wines, many between $10 and $15, they hope to draw big crowds. They'll offer free wine tastings and food pairing tips, and through it all, they're relying on local resources. "We always wanted to use local artisans, craftsman, designers to support the local economy," said Allison Palermo-Record.
They've collected wine corks from around the world and hope customers will buy a bottle, then bring back the cork and keep the pile growing. All the while, growing a small local business to prove dreams really do come true. "Everyday we're hearing stories of how bad the economy is and sometimes it can drag you down. I think opening a business like ours and anyone who takes the challenge to open a business now sends a message out to the local folks that maybe it's really not as bad as you think," said Allison Palermo-Record.
Their soft opening is scheduled for Saturday. Their motto: unique and affordable. It's a local family, putting money back into the local economy.
