SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse man was arraigned Monday morning on a hate crime charge, accused of killing a transgender victim.
An Onondaga County grand jury handed up the indictment Friday, charging Dwight DeLee with murder as a hate crime, murder and a weapons possession charge.
District Attorney William Fitzpatrick says DeLee shot Latiesha Green in the chest November 14 after hearing comments about Green's sexual orientation. Relatives said Latiesha Green was living as a woman, having been born with the name Moses Cannon, but was not wearing women's clothes the night of the shooting.
DeLee's family has said he had no hatred for people different from himself.
The 20-year-old DeLee faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
