SYRACUSE -- “Tea Parties”, that protest high government spending and taxation, have been popping up around the country for the past few months and Joanne Wilder from Cicero was anxious to host one in Syracuse. When a national group decided to try and start more than two thousand of these gatherings on tax day, Joanne was thrilled to be able to host one in Syracuse. It looks like she’s already got an extensive guest list. "I'm getting phone calls as far away as Massena, down to Binghamton, to Little Falls and outside Rochester from people who want to participate in this,” says Wilder. “I would say I get 50 to 100 emails a day." Wilder says she hopes the tea party will open people’s eyes to the realities of the economic stimulus plan. “There's going to be consequences down the road to all the spending,” said Wilder. "This country needs to understand that tax and spend does not work. We need to make our government smaller and we need to give tax relief to the citizens in this country." President Obama’s administration has said the spending is needed to keep the country from falling into a deeper recession or a full blown depression. Wilder disagreed and said, "It's been tried before. It's been tried in other countries. Look at the U.K., China, Russia's tried it. It doesn't work."
