SYRACUSE -- A push is underway in Onondaga County to target unsafe drivers.
Police agencies will be out looking for aggressive drivers and promoting school bus safety this week as the county takes part in the state-wide 'Operation Safe Stop' program. The program's mission is to promote school bus safety through education and enforcement efforts.
On Thursday, police will be following school buses to look for drivers who pass when the buses are stopped. Drivers must stop when the school bus red lights are flashing, even when the school bus is in a parking lot, on school grounds, on a multiple lane highway or on the opposite side of a divided highway.
First time offenders could face a fine of up to $400 and up to 30 days in jail. A second convictions could mean a $750 fine and up to six months in jail, and the third offense could cost $1,000 and six months in jail.
