SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Press Club held its 31st Annual Awards Recognition and Scholarship Dinner on Saturday night at Drumlins County Club on Nottingham Road. The event, which was attended by more than 160 Central New York journalists and their guests, spotlighted the very best that the area has to offer in a host of media professions spanning print, television, radio, and online.
Action News and CNYcentral.com staff are proud to have received awards in a handful of categories, including:
Best News Promotion (1st place): Brendon Fontanella and Steve Christensen
Best Newscast (2nd place): Action News Live at Five, produced by Brianne Betts
Best TV Human Interest Feature (1st place): "Jackie and Me", by John Evenson and Jason Hy
Best News Web Site (1st place): CNYcentral.com, managed by Jeremy Ryan
Several club awards were also handed out to area professionals for their years of service to local journalism. They include:
The Bliven-Ganley-Rossi Career Achievement Award: Barry Katz (The Post-Standard) and John Hurtbutt (WRVO)
The Selwyn Kershaw Professional Standards Award: Mike Grogan (The Post-Standard) and Roger Mirabito (WSYR-TV)
The Philip A. Hofmann President’s Award for Best News Source: Former Onondaga County Medical Examiner Dr. Mary Jumbelic
The A. Brohmann Roth Newcomer Award: Jasmyn Belcher (WRVO), Alyssa Sunkin (The Auburn Citizen), and Ray Villeda (WSYR-TV)
The Devesty-Williams Scholarship Winner: Nathan Keep (Tompkins-Cortland Community College)
The Bernard and Dorothy Newer Service Award: John Nicholson (S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, Syracuse University)
The awards ceremony was hosted by Liz Ayers and George Kilpatrick of WCNY-TV, who were both recognized in the best public affairs program category.
