ALBANY (AP) -- Opponents of the same-sex marriage bill that's expected to take a step forward in New York's Legislature say the measure portrayed as a civil right for some would violate the rights of others.
They say a marriage law would unnecessarily force others to accept a political redefinition of wedlock, while missing a chance to protect same-sex couples rights through civil unions.
The state Assembly is expected to pass the bill by late Tuesday, with Assemblyman Daniel O'Donnell of Manhattan, the gay brother of entertainer Rosie O'Donnell, delivering the vote he promised when he was elected five years ago.
It would then be up to the Senate to make New York the sixth state to legalize gay marriage.
