LACONA -- The only soup kitchen from Watertown to Syracuse on the Interstate 81 corridor is facing the possibility of shutting down because of a leaky roof.  With the help of the community, generous donations, and fund raising, the group has raised more than $20,000 and has started work on the roof.

The Lacona Soup Kitchen is just $7,000 short of its overall goal, but those involved are confident they are going to get that money. With the help of a local contractor they have begun working on a much needed fix. Within two weeks, the new roof will be complete.

For the pastor who runs the soup kitchen, shutting it’s doors was never something he wanted to do. His wife, Sharon Taplin worked hard to keep the doors open and serving people. She does admit there were times when she and her husband were doubtful they would be able to keep going. “God got us this far, I don’t think he would keep us from our goal,” says Sharon.

The group says they will continue to fund raise with can drives and maybe a talent show.
