SYRACUSE -- The man responsible for a double homicide in Syracuse will spend 22 years to life in state prison.
28-year-old John Gilchrist was sentenced Wednesday morning for the murders of 24-year-old Jodie Cohens of Geneva and 25-year-old William Fowler of Syracuse. Gilchrist pleaded guilty to first degree murder on April 29, admitting to shooting Cohens and Fowler in Lincoln Park.
The victims were cousins, who were sitting in a rented SUV in the park on New Year's Eve when they were killed.
Cohens was shot five times and Fowler twice. Prosecutors said Cohens had sold Gilchrist a kilogram of fake cocaine for $23,000 late last summer. Gilchrist previously said that the shooting was in retaliation for that phony drug deal.
