SYRACUSE -- A woman wrongly convicted of burglary, arson, and hindering prosecution will receive a quarter of a million dollars from the State of New York.
The State Court of Claims is awarding Shirley Kinge $250,000 for damages suffered because of malicious prosecution and her wrongful imprisonment. Kinge was convicted of several charges related to the murder of the Harris family in 1989.
Shirley’s son Michael Kinge committed the murders, but a State Police investigator admits he planted evidence, tying Shirley Kinge to the crimes. She was released in 1992 after spending two and a half years in prison.
Earlier this year, Judge Nicholas Midey found Shirley Kinge was the victim of malicious prosecution. Friday he said in a court decision that Kinge deserves the payment for the emotional suffering, loss of privacy, and loss of liberty she experienced during the ordeal.
