Final 10 days prevented a top 5 cold July

After being on pace to have the coldest July on record, the jet stream pattern allowed seasonable warmth to return to central New York.  The last week and a half featured near normal temperatures.  That was enough to prevent not only the coldest July on record, but to take us out of contention for the top 5 coldest Julys on record.  Here is that list of the top 5 coldest average temperatures on record (this includes both high and low temperatures each day):

66.7° / 1976

67.0° / 2000

67.3° / 1992

67.5° / 1965

67.6° / 1967

In July 2009, we ended up with an average temperature of 68.0° which was 2.9° below normal.  In addition, our average high temperature was 77.4° which was 4.3° below normal.  That goes to show you that the daytime temperatures were even more noticeably cooler than usual versus the nighttime lows.  We ended up with zero days of 90°.  Normally, we average 4 days of 90° every July.  Our warmest temperature was 87° on July 28th and our coldest temperature was 50° on July 14th

With respect to precipitation, we officially ended up way below normal, at least at Hancock Airport, for the amount of rain in July.  We had a total of 2.04” of rain which was 1.98” below normal.  However, we recorded 19 days where Syracuse officially had between a Trace of rain and 0.10”.  This demonstrates that we received many days of rain, but many of these days only recorded light amounts.   Furthermore, we had some isolated to scattered heavier rains that hit some sections of central New York, but missed Hancock Airport.  So, the rainfall tallies vary across our viewing area.

Here are some other notable numbers.  We only had 53% of total sunshine.  We had 12 days where fog was noted.  We had a total of 11 days where the high temperature reached 80° or higher.
