SYRACUSE -- The summer of 2009 has had more of a “fall-ish” feel more often than not.  However, Central New York finally received a seasonable summer stretch during much of the middle of the month of August, especially with respect to those temperamental temperatures.  For August, Syracuse Hancock International Airport averaged 70.9°.  The average temperature takes each daily high and low temperature and averages them together over the 31 days.  That number was 1.7° above normal for an average August.  This was the first month since April that the average high temperature was over 1° warm than normal.  During the middle of the month, we received a 13 day in a row stretch where the high temperature was 80° or higher.  There was a total of 17 days where the temperature exceeded 80° and 1 day (August 17th) where the temperature exceeded 90°.

With respect to precipitation, our rainfall was above average.  The official monthly total for rain at Hancock Airport was 4.57” which was 1.01” above normal.  While there were at least some stretches where there was not any rain.  However, we did get dumped on during a few occasions that more than made up for any dry stretches.

Looking forward into September, after starting chilly both Tuesday and Wednesday, temperatures will rebound into the afternoon to slightly below normal readings.  Thereafter, high and low temperatures should reach near to slightly above normal for the rest of the week and into the weekend.  More importantly, it appears that we should receive a long dry stretch accompanied by a wealth of sunshine.
