Would only be in checked baggage
The Senate passed a measure Wednesday that would require Amtrak to allow passengers to transport firearms onboard trains. The measure would take away $1.6 billion in federal subsidies for Amtrak if they continued the ban on firearms. The measure would allow licensed gun owners to transport firearms only if they are unloaded and checked in luggage.
Supporters say the measure would give Americans the same second amendment rights as airline travelers who are allowed to check firearms. Opponents say Amtrak lacks the necessary manpower needed to make sure firearms checked in bags are not lost, misused or stolen.
Passengers like Lee Milstead of Penneville say they don't like the new regulations. "I don't think carrying firearms on a train should be allowed. Its dangerous! You never know what could happen," he says.
