EASTWOOD -- Thanksgiving might not be until Thursday, but Monday, students at Blessed Sacrament School were hard at work baking pumpkin pies for the Rescue Mission in Syracuse. This year, they are hoping to bake 150 pies. It’s a tradition that has been going on for the last 11 years. Not only does it teach kids how to make a pie, it also teaches them about helping others. “We are very big into service and this starts at a very young age,” says Diane Harris a first grade teacher at Blessed Sacrament. “Our children have been doing this for years…we continue it because it’s important for them to know not everyone is as blessed as they will be on Thanksgiving day.”
Lisa Coppola started baking pies with her first graders 11 years ago. When she came up with this idea to give back, she hoped it would continue in the years to come. Monday, she was volunteering as a proud parent, watching and helping her daughter bake pies. “It’s really nice because now my daughter is making pumpkin pies, so it’s got a little sentimental value to me, “Coppola said.
All of the supplies were donated by parents and staff. They heard about the pumpkin pie filling shortage and made sure they had enough. In fact, they think they might have too much. What is left over will be donated to a local food bank.
