TOWN OF SALINA -- The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department says out of every major holiday including, New Year's Eve and Saint Patrick's Day, the night before Thanksgiving is the biggest night of the year for people to be out drinking. That, of course, leads to drinking and driving.
The Onondaga County Sheriff's Department set up D.W.I. checkpoints, including one in Salina. At the checkpoints, they stop every car to try and determine if drivers are under the influence.
Deputies say if you think you are better off driving around the checkpoints, you are missing the message they are trying to send. Sergeant Richard McCarron says, "What we're trying to get across, don't be out drinking and driving, because of the possible repercussions of an arrest, the humiliation, the financial costs, loss of your license. And God forbid you could be killed or you could kill someone else."
In addition to the Sheriff's D.W.I. checkpoints, Syracuse City Police dedicated 16 officers to conduct additional checkpoints. The message: As always, if you are out and have a drink, call a cab.
