BREWERTON -- More than 100 people braved the dipping temperatures Saturday afternoon to take the very first Polar Bear Plunge at Oneida Shores. Polar Plunger Amy says, "It's for a good cause, and I'm crazy."
Amy, and many like her, plunged with friends from SUNY Oswego. They were helping to raise money for the Special Olympics of New York. President and CEO Neal Johnson says, "It's a great, fun event, and we have great success. Not only helping us raise money, but helping us raise awareness for our progress."
One by one, they walk wearily into the chilling water, wading for a while and quickly coming out on tip toes. Amy says, "I'm not sure I felt anything, I felt myself screaming to take away the pain. I don't know if it worked."
Saturday's polar plunge at Oneida Shores is the first, but with such a big turnout, they hope to turn it into an annual event, proving you don't need polar bear's fur to help a good cause.
