SENNETT -- In July, two sisters in their eighties were killed after their car ran into the path of a tractor trailer. In October, an eighteen year old died after, also, turning into oncoming traffic. Those accidents got the DOT to undertake a traffic study on the intersection which only had flashing yellow lights on Route 34 and flashing red lights and stop signs on Turnpike Road.
The DOT's traffic study found that the number of accidents, traffic volume and delays justified a full traffic signal. The lights are in place and should start in a few weeks. This is now the second DOT project aimed at improving the intersection in recent years.
People in Sennett have been concerned about the intersection for years and hope it's days as a danger are over.
The new traffic light was able to be put in so quickly, in part, because of the infrastructure power lines from the earlier DOT work. There will also be signs warning drivers of the new traffic signal.
