SYRACUSE -- As expected, Syracuse officially picked up more than 1” of snow Wednesday morning.  As of 7:00 AM Wednesday December 9th, Hancock Airport received 3.4” of snow.  This brings to an end of the snowless streak that started back the last time we had 1” of snow or more back on February 24th.  That means starting on February 25th and ending on Tuesday December 8th we did not have one day with 1” or more of snow in Syracuse.  That is a record stretch of 287 consecutive days.  That easily beats the old record of 276 days back in 1946.

Even with Wednesday's snow, we are still about 12 inches behind for the seasonal snow to date.  We are not expecting that much more snow for the rest of the day.  That is because we have already begun the transition to sleet, freezing rain, and rain.

Our next issue will be strong winds and eventually localized heavy lake effect snow.  Both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario will producing heavy lake effect snow squalls northeast and east of both lakes.  While Central New York will occasionally have some snow showers, flurries and brief squalls from Lake Erie, localized accumulations should be relatively low over sections of the area.

Areas east of Lake Ontario will not be so lucky.  A combination of a long duration wind and localized snow squall event will likely produce total accumulation measuring in feet between Thursday and Saturday.  The most prone areas for the hefty amounts of snow will be sections of Jefferson and Lewis counties.  Some spots in southern Saint Lawrence, northern Oswego, and northern Herkimer counties will be at risk.  Stay tuned for updates!
