MANLIUS -- Fayetteville-Manlius High School has again been honored as one of the top high schools in the nation.
U.S.News & World Report released its 2010 list of "Americas Best High Schools" on Thursday. The report listed F-M High School as a “Silver Medal School,” placing it among the top 5 percent of schools in New York State and the top 3 percent of schools nationwide.
F-M High School Principal James Chupaila said he's proud the school has earned the recognition.
"It's a team effort," Chupaila said. "We have an lot of committed people, we have a strong curriculum and we appreciate the continuous support of our community."
The methodology the magazine used to create the ranking was developed by School Evaluation Services, a K-12 education data research business run by Standard & Poor's. According to the magazine, the methodology is “based on the key principles that a great high school must serve all its students well, not just those who are college-bound, and that it must be able to produce measurable academic outcomes to show the school is successfully educating its student body across a range of performance indicators.”
The study analyzed information from 21,786 public high schools in 48 states plus the District of Columbia. Just 561 of those schools met the criteria for a silver or gold medal.
In a message to the high school staff Friday, Chupaila credited them for the honor.
"It is each of you, instructional and non-instructional, who are to be congratulated," he wrote. "The recognition would not have come to us if it were not for your level of commitment to your work. Thank you for the time and energy you give each day to enabling FMHS to be the high school it is."
