Sunday was opening day for skiing at Toggenburg Mountain and plenty of eager skiers hit the slopes when they had doubts just a few weeks ago that they would be able to ski before Christmas.
Staff spent days been preparing the slopes for the big opening.
Nick Mir with Toggenburg Mountain said, "We've been making a ton of snow. It got cold a few days ago. We've been able to blow snow pretty much throughout the day for the last three days."
Just a few weeks ago, they couldn't even picture this day happening.
"It was pretty worrisome a couple weeks ago when it was 60 degrees outside. But as long as we're open by Christmas we're pretty happy with that," said Mir.
Some skiers say they can't get into the holiday spirit until they hit the slopes here for the first time.
Skier Bill Gehrke said, "I refuse to listen to Christmas carols until I ski. That gives you the depth of sincerity."
Ski instructors were also happy to see the weather turn colder and Toggenburg to open the trails. They say business is certainly picking up now.
Mir said, "As soon as the snow hit the ground people started coming in and buying their passes. We really don't start to see big crowds until Christmas time. That's when people really start coming out and enjoying the winter.
The staff hopes that the weather stays cold that's when business here will really heat up.
