Cautions on trees, lights, candles

It's mostly common sense, but the Firemen's Association of the State of NY has reminders to keep you, and your home, safe from fire this holiday season.  Gordon Kotars says to make sure your Christmas tree is fresh, and keeps drinking while inside.  Holiday lighting needs to be checked for frayed wires.  Burned out fuses and broken bulbs also pose fire hazards, and make sure the power cords are heavy enough, and designed for where you put them: don't use an indoor cord for outside lights. And decorations for mantle, or elsewhere need to be kept away from candles, fireplaces and other potential fire starters.  The Association website,  www.fasny.com has more information and a link to the National Fire Protection Association (www.nfpa.org) which has more holiday safety tips.
