Christmas came a little early for Tammy Otts and her daughter Becky Bender. In June, Becky was in an a major car accident in New Orleans. She suffered a broken neck and severe brain trauma. After raising thousands of dollars, her family air-lifted Becky back home to Baldwinsville to begin rehab treatment .
Now Becky is able to communicate with her family through a letterboard. Christmas Eve, she's home. Something they wouldn't of thought possible just a few months ago. Tammy says, "I wasn't sure what to expect. When I brought her home she wasn't totally herself. She didn't know what was going on."
Becky still has a lot of physical therapy to go through. Christmas Eve is a test. She has to go back to the hospital later on Christmas Day, but after that she can come home again. Becky's family says they're already planning to renovate the house to make it more wheelchair friendly for some longer visits. "Every weekend it's different, you get more time, steps, baby steps. But it's working out," says Tammy.
In the meantime, Becky continues to improve, and simply having her home with family for just one night is a miracle in itself.
