If you are heading out on the Thruway this weekend, plan on bringing some spare change.
A 5 percent toll hike takes effect on Sunday. This marks the last of a multi-year toll increase which was approved back in 2008.
The Thruway Authority says the hike is necessary to help pay for repairs to roads and bridges. The 5 percent increase, which applies to both cash and E-Z Pass customers, is projected to bring in an additional $640 million to the Thruway Authority's Budget.
Drivers like John Steria, of Boonville, say the Thruway which was built more than fifty years ago should of paid for itself by now. " I don't think we should have to pay to drive on the road. I think it should be free," Steria says.
