Happy New Year skiers and boarders! Here is hoping for another great year on the slopes. Maybe 2009 didn’t bring you enough days on the mountains? Personally, I’m busy with most of my free time playing Barbie and dancing around the house with my three, young daughters. Still no little Brookins on skis with me, but at least I’ve got a snow tuber. She saw the ski trails and said maybe next year. Baby steps, I keep telling myself.
WOOHOO!!! It’s about time our weather pattern has turned to a cold and snowy one. The combination of east coast snow storm snow and cold air creating lake effect snow has made for some powder days ahead. Trail counts at local areas will rise dramatically early this week and most places should be near fully open if they are not already. Looking at the next seven days, I see more of the same weather. A prolonged cold and snowy pattern. I’ll end this topic with a loud YEAH!!!
With the New Year’s holiday behind us, many school ski clubs will begin their weekly run to the mountains. These clubs are a great way to improve both you skiing and boarding skills, as well as friendships. I still hit the slopes with a few of my ski buddies from junior and senior high school a couple of times each year. Enjoy the next six or more weeks taking part in the clubs. You’ll come out a better skier and maybe make a lifelong friend along the way.
Coming to a ski area near you….Greek Peak is looking for some extreme skiers and boarders to show off their stuff. A rail jam coming up on Friday January 8th there. If you are a college student bring your equipment and school ID to Labrador on Monday and Tuesday evenings. Special savings for you while you take a book break. Lastly, up at McCauley in Old Forge, anyone looking for some fun racing can join a league which will run each Tuesday at 6pm.
Coming up later this week I will be heading out west for the second year straight to ski. I’m super excited for my trip to a place where they get an astounding 500” or more of snow each season, and will tell you all about it here in my blog when I return.
Leave a comment below and let me know how you found any local resorts to be skiing. Have a digital picture of it? Email it to me at mbrookins@CNYcentral.com and I may use it in next week’s WSTM NBC-3 ski report. Happy trails!
