SYRACUSE -- Syracuse firefighters were called to the Appletree Apartments at 1033 James Street around 3:45 Wednesday morning for a report of a fire.
Some light smoke could be seen by our photographer outside the apartments. The fire, which began in building C of the complex, has affected buildings A through E.
The local Red Cross chapter has set up a warming center at the nearby Transfiguration Church on Teall Avenue for the tenants displaced by the fire. They are trying to convert the church into a shelter to house the tenants overnight.
The building was hit with a fire in the boiler room on Monday leaving dozens of residents without heat or power. A Centro bus was brought in by the Red Cross for residents to have a warm place to stay while the fire department continued its work, and Peace Incorporated has provided meals for tenants at the Transfiguration Church warming center.
"The maintenance guys located me in Apartment C4, which was right across from this one and just started all over again. Same chain of events and I'm like 'Oh no not again'!" said Kevin Dillon, an Appletree tenant.
James Street was closed to traffic for a time, but now all lanes have reopened.
The Red Cross says any tenants that are affected by the fire and were not at the scene, please contact a Red Cross Disaster Team member for assistance at 234-2200 or stop by the Transfiguration Church.
Investigators say both fires started in concealed floor space under the utility room, and both appear to be accidental.
