POMPEY -- A chimney fire has heavily damaged a home in Pompey in southeastern Onondaga County.
Fire crews were called to Number 4 Road West just after 6:00 p.m. Sunday after receiving reports of a fire. When firefighters arrived on the scene, they say they saw heavy smoke coming out the chimney and flames could be seen coming out of the side of the house. Everyone who was inside the house when the fire started was able to get out unharmed.
The Pompey Hill fire chief says the fire started in the chimney. "They had been having problems with the wood stove and the chimney," said Chief Dennis Smith. "They cleaned it earlier in the day, thought they resolved the problem but obviously they didn't get to the root cause, they re-lit the fire and again the fire obviously got through the chimney and got into the side of the house."
The fire remains under investigation.
