ROCHESTER -- The news has been filled the past few months with the woes of Syracuse based Penn Traffic and the uncertainty bankruptcy brings to thousands of workers at its P&C supermarkets. But employees at Rochester based competitor Wegmans are faring much better.
According to a news release from the company, Wegmans has made Fortune Magazine's annual "Best Companies to Work For" list. coming in at number three. Wegmans has made the list every year since the list first appeared in 1998.
It’s our people who make Wegmans a great place to work,” says CEO Danny Wegman. “They respect and care for one another and for our customers. I am very grateful and proud of what they are able to accomplish.”
The criteria for this year's winner has a lot to do with the economy, according to Fortune Deputy Managing Editor Hank Gilman. "The most important considerations for this year’s list were hiring and the ways in which companies are helping their employees weather the recession. All 100 companies on our list are currently hiring, many of them aggressively, leading to more than 96,000 open job positions expected in the next year.”
Most of the new staff Wegmans is attributed to new supermarkets in Pennsylvania and Maryland that will open this year. However, the company says it does have open positions in some of its existing stores and in manufacturing and distribution.
