LIVERPOOL -- The plan to close an elementary school in Liverpool is going faster than first expected. Superintendent Richard Johns will announce Monday he wants to close Wetzel Road Elementary at the end of the school year.

The proposal is a key recommendation in his new budget. Last month, the district asked neighbors to help study all of the elementary schools. However, the closure plan will come sooner because of declining enrollment and a loss of state funding.

School Board President Patricia Mouton says the ultimate goal is to create a high school campus using buildings near the school, including Wetzel Road Elementary. Mouton says no buildings will be sold, they will just be used in different ways.

Even with the superintendent's announcement, the closure is not a done deal. The School Board still needs to approve it.
