SYRACUSE -- Last week, CNYcentral told you how some Syracuse residents are upset because neighborhood sidewalks are covered with snow. According to the city, it is the responsibility of the property owner or tenant to keep the sidewalks clean in front of their home, but there is no fine if people don't obey the regulations.
Wednesday, we asked Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner what the city is doing about this.
“We've looked at different creative issues to try to solve these problems. Over on the east side in the university area, they've got a partnership going on where people are pitching in to help pay for sidewalks being cleaned off, so we've done all sorts of different thing, we're looking at other programs across the state to do this,” said Miner.
Mayor Miner also says that before adding a penalty, the city is trying to change public perception and get people to realize how important it is to keep sidewalks clear in the name of public safety.
