GEDDES -- Murad Marji serves up lots of tasty sandwiches everyday at his Geddes deli, but if P&C shuts down its nearby warehouse and distribution centers as expected, the loss of the warehouse will mean the loss of some of his best customers. "A lot of them are repeat customers five days a week. They will come in here every single day," Marji says.
While there has been no official announcement on the closing of P&C's distribution center in Geddes, employees say they've been told February 21st will be their last day. Geddes's town supervisor Manny Falcone says if the distribution center shuts down the town would lose close to 500 jobs. "This is just a nail in the coffin as far as doing away with jobs and people moving out of the area," Falcone says. Geddes tax records show P&C paid more than $144,000 in property taxes last year and another $266,000 in school tax.
The town's big hope now is that another retailer will take over the distribution center. "I think it is a perfect spot for somebody to come in refurbish it. All the utilities are there and we are ready to go," he says. Murad Marji is also ready for another company to come in and take over the distribution center. "I really hope another company will take over. it is just a shame seeing those two warehouses go to waste," he says.
Tops recently took over all of Penn Traffic's grocery stores, incluing the P&C chain.
