LIVERPOOL -- When Greg Callen, of Liverpool, broke his back in a fall off a balcony four years ago, he says he lost a lot more than the use of his legs. "I was a very independent person and to lose that independence and have to move back in with your parents..and be dependent again...you feel lost," Callen says.
Helping people like Callen, with disabilities, find a new sense of purpose through skiing is the goal of the Winter Challenge at Greek Peak. The four day annual event is paid for by sponsors and made possible by the hard work of volunteer ski instructors.
"It's a program that's done wonders, for me changed my life, got me looking at life totally different." said John Solowiej, one of those volunteers, Soloweij knows a thing or two about disabled skiing since he's been skiing on one leg for twenty two years. Something he says he thought he'd never do. " I tried skiing once before when I had two legs. I swore I'd never do it again," Soloweij said.
For Greg Callen learning to ski has given him back the freedom he thought he lost four years ago. "I'm not feeling disabled, I'm feeling independent! That helps me overcome a lot of challenges", Callen says.
