Blodgett, Seymour doing better
It was like getting a good report card. Syracuse City Schools got word on Tuesday that two low-performing schools are now off the state watch list. Blodgett preK to 8, and Seymour Dual Language Academy both had improved math and English achievement tests.
Chris Vogelsang, Deputy Syracuse Superintendant, says the numbers are something to cheer about, especially since 40% of the students at both schools are non-native English speakers who have to take the tests in the first year of classes, and that the state upped the curve on the tests by 15 points. Vogelsang says an intense training program, a new English as a Second Language program, plus Say Yes help which will allow year-round school are all components of ongoing efforts at strengthening the schools.
Delaware Academy remains on the watch list. And, the state warns that more schools will go on next year, as graduation rates are figured in as part of the quality considerations.
