MASSENA (AP) -- The Salvation Army in northern New York is looking for relatives of an American soldier who was killed in Normandy, France on D-Day.
Officials with the organization in Massena say someone recently donated items that included a Purple Heart certificate and photograph of Sgt. Richard Owen. Salvation Army officials say they want to return the items to his family but don't know who donated the items or whether the family is from the North Country.
A Salvation Army official says Owen's mother probably lived in Winchester, Va. during World War II.
The official used the Internet to research Owen's military service and learned that he served with "Easy" Company of the 101st Airborne Division, the paratrooper unit featured in the miniseries "Band of Brothers."
Owen was born in Indiana and joined the National Guard in Virginia.
He was killed on D-Day -- June 6th, 1944 -- when his transport was hit by German anti-aircraft fire and crashed.
