ROME, ONEIDA CO. -- Top officials from Empire Aero Center in Rome are meeting with the State Labor Department. The goal of the meeting is to work out a plan to help the hundreds of workers being laid off from the company.
Last week, Empire Aero warned the state, saying it plans to cut 203 jobs at its facility in Griffiss Business Park as early as May 10th. Those workers include highly specialized FAA mechanics, who repair and overhaul airplanes. Empire Aero is a major employer in the Mohawk Valley. Because the workers have specific skills, it could be tough to match them with other employers in the region.
The State Department of Labor will hold Rapid Response sessions for workers soon after Wednesday's meeting. They'll also discuss a targeted job fair for the workers. During the Rapid Response sessions, workers will learn how to apply for unemployment insurance, attend workshops on resume and cover letter writing, learn about job matching services as well as training opportunities that can make their skills valuable to other local employers.
