ORISKANY FALLS -- The Covidien plant in Oriskany Falls is shutting down. Employees were notified Thursday. There are 185 full time employees and 10 to 15 temporary employees there.

The process will begin in August. It will take about 12 to 18 months to completely shut down the plant. The manufacturing done there is being moved to facilities in Massachusetts and Georgia. Workers will have the opportunity to transfer to those other facilities. There are also two other plants in New York State that have jobs available.

Workers who are not able to transfer will be given full severance depending on how long they've worked with the company. Covidien is also providing help for finding a new job.

The company says this is part of its global restructuring program to improve operating efficiency and encourage future growth. A company spokesperson says there is excess capacity at the facilities in Massachusetts and Georgia.

Covidien makes medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and medical supplies.
