TOWN GERMAN FLATS, HERKIMER COUNTY -- Update: 1:50 PM- Syracuse University Chancelor Nancy Cantor sent out this message today on the death of Syracuse University student Jamie Klemczak who was killed early Saturday morning in a hit and run accident on the NYS Thruway in Herkimer County.
Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,
It is with sorrow that I inform you of the death of one of our undergraduate students, Jamie Klemczak, 21, who died early this morning in a motor vehicle accident on the New York State Thruway in Herkimer County. Jamie was a senior studying in The College of Arts and Sciences.
Our hearts go out to Jamie’s family, friends, and the faculty and staff who knew her. The loss of a member of the campus community is painful for all of us, and everyone is affected differently. That is why we reach out to comfort each other.
Our Student Affairs staff is providing support to those who had a personal connection to Jamie and also reaching out to her family. In addition, the University has a broad array of counseling services available to the campus community. The Counseling Center (443-4715), Hendricks Chapel (443-2901) and the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program (443-1087) are all available to anyone who feels he or she needs support.
During this very difficult time, our thoughts are with Jamie’s loved ones and friends.

Update: State Police in Herkimer are investigating a fatal hit and run crash on westbound I-90 at approximately 4:30 Saturday morning in the Town German Flats. The female victim is identified at 21- year old Jamie B. Klemczak of Albany, New York.
Investigators say Klemczak had been involved in a minor one car accident eastbound on I90 and had exited her vehicle. They say she tried to cross the westbound lanes and was struck by a passing vehicle. The investigation has determined that the vehicle was possibly a silver Toyota. The vehicle should have front end, driver side damage.

If you're traveling the Thruway east near Herkimer, be prepared for delays, after a crash just before exit 30.
As of 8am one lane is re-opened, however there is a large traffic backup.
